Image and Vision Computing has as a primary aim the provision of an effective medium of interchange for the results of high quality theoretical and applied research fundamental to all aspects of image interpretation and computer vision. The journal publishes work that proposes new image interpretation and computer vision methodology or addresses the application of such methods to real world scenes. It seeks to strengthen a deeper understanding in the discipline by encouraging the quantitative comparison and performance evaluation of the proposed methodology. The coverage includes: image interpretation, scene modelling, object recognition and tracking, shape analysis, monitoring and surveillance, active vision and robotic systems, SLAM, biologically-inspired computer vision, motion analysis, stereo vision, document image understanding, character and handwritten text recognition, face and gesture recognition, biometrics, vision-based human-computer interaction, human activity and behavior understanding, data fusion from multiple sensor inputs, image databases.

In addition to regular manuscripts, Image and Vision Computing Journal solicits manuscripts for the Opinions Column, aimed at initiating a free forum for vision researchers to express their opinions on past, current, or future successes and challenges in research and the community.

An opinion paper should be succinct and focused on a particular topic. Addressing multiple related topics is also possible if this helps making the point. While posing questions helps raising awareness about certain issues, ideally, an opinion paper should also suggest a concrete direction how to address the issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Comments on success and challenges in a (sub-) field of computer vision,
Remarks on new frontiers in computer vision
Observations on current practices and trends in research, and suggestions for overcoming unsatisfying aspects
Observations on current practices and trends in the community regarding, e.g., reviewing process, organizing conferences, how journals are run, and suggestions for overcoming unsatisfying aspects
Reviews of early seminal work that may have fallen out of fashion
Summaries of the evolution of one's line of research
Recommendations for educating new generations of vision researchers.

The format of an opinion paper should comply with the existing formatting guidelines for the Image and Vision Computing Journal submissions, and should not exceed 2 pages.

Months of publication: January/February, March, April, May, June, July/August, September, October, November and December.

Special Issue on Embodied Artificial Intelligence for Robotic Vision and Navigation
提出日: 2025-01-30

Embodied Artificial Intelligence has emerged as an essential area for research and applications. Unlike traditional AI systems that operate solely in the digital realm, Embodied AI seeks to imbue machines with a physical presence, enabling them to perceive, interact, and learn from the real world. Robotic Vision and Navigation integrates computer vision techniques to process and make sense of visual data, such as images or videos, allowing the AI system to perceive obstacles, recognize landmarks, and navigate through complex surroundings. This capability is essential for embodied AI to function autonomously in diverse environments, such as homes, offices, or outdoor spaces. This special issue seeks original contributions towards advancing the theory, architecture, and algorithmic design for Vision and Navigation systems in Embodied AI, as well as their novel applications and use cases. Special Issue on Advancing Transparency and Privacy: Explainable AI and Synthetic Data in Biometrics and Computer Vision
提出日: 2025-02-07

The rapid advancement of deep learning presents significant challenges, particularly in the realm of ethical data collection and usage. As regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) gain prominence, the need for rigorous ethical standards across various fields becomes increasingly apparent. In domains such as biometrics, data has frequently been collected without appropriate consent or ethical consideration. The medical field, in particular, grapples with the dual challenges of safeguarding privacy and the inherent difficulties of data acquisition. Ensuring continued progress in deep learning requires that data collection and generation practices adhere to strict ethical guidelines. Greater control over data is essential to enhancing transparency and fairness within deep learning methodologies. Attention must also be given to the explainability of systems trained on generated data, as well as the fairness implications of using synthetic datasets. Addressing these challenges is critical to fostering more ethical and responsible advancements in deep learning. The Special Issue aims to promote research on the use of Explainable AI and Synthetic Data to enhance transparency and privacy in Biometrics and Computer Vision. 提出日: 2025-03-01

In modern healthcare, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve patient outcomes, make clinical workflows more efficient, and solve long-standing problems. Integrating intelligent systems into medical practice, also known as Smart Medicine, is at the cutting edge of this technological revolution, driving advances in illness diagnosis, treatment, and management. Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) enable experts to analyze vast amounts of diverse data types, such as biomedical data, wearable sensor data, clinical records, environmental factors, and even linguistic and textual data. This can improve resource allocation, efficient healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. AI algorithms can accurately interpret and extract patterns from complex imagery in medical imaging, such as radiological scans, MRI images, CT scans, ultrasound images, and pathology slides. AI techniques, detecting and precisely segmenting anomalies, facilitate early disease detection and timely intervention, potentially saving lives. Additionally, in mental health informatics, AI revolutionizes diagnostic and treatment approaches for psychiatric disorders. Leveraging technological advancements, AI facilitates the development of more effective interventions, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes. This special issue focuses on the impact of transformative AI in modern healthcare, emphasizing its applications in medical imaging, mental health informatics, and clinical decision-support systems. It aims to explore how AI, in particular ML, DL, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and eXplainable AI, can enhance diagnostic accuracy, improve treatment outcomes, and optimize clinical decision support systems.
