Aims and scope

Advances in Materials Science and Engineering is a broad scope journal that publishes articles in all areas of materials science and engineering including, but not limited to:

    Chemistry and fundamental properties of matter
    Material synthesis, fabrication, manufacture, and processing
    Magnetic, electrical, thermal, and optical properties of materials
    Strength, durability, and mechanical behaviour of materials
    Consideration of materials in structural design, modelling, and engineering 
    Green and renewable materials, and consideration of materials’ life cycles
    Materials in specialist applications (such as medicine, energy, aerospace, and nanotechnology)

Submission of original research, and focused review articles, is welcomed from materials scientists and engineers across both academia and industry.

Special Issue on Additive Manufacturing of Materials

Description Three-dimensional (3D) printing or additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have reached full development and introduced a new era in product design and production. Layer-by-layer manufacturing methods enable the production of components with intricate geometries and properties that vary gradually across their structure. AM conserves resources by utilizing less material. The utilization of end-part production is gradually supplanting prototyping as the predominant application of the technology. Various AM fabrication techniques have been developed to produce functional parts using different materials and forms. These techniques include fused filament fabrication, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, melting, and laser-engineered net shaping. Undoubtedly, various distinct challenges need to be addressed, including the anisotropy and porosity of materials resulting from inadequate fusion and the warping caused by residual stress from rapid cooling in AM. A thorough understanding of the AM process is necessary that encompasses the processability of the feedstock materials (including their rheological properties and powder flowability) and the correlation between the process-structure property attributes of the AM part. The quality of the final parts in AM can be influenced by various process parameters. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is required considering material properties, interactions between solids and liquids, fluid dynamics, grain growth, and thermal-mechanical interactions. To develop physics-based models, a comprehensive grasp of additive manufacturing processes across various scales and physics domains is necessary. The aim of this Special Issue is to understand the utilization of additive and subtractive manufacturing methods in the production of metals, alloys, composites, polymers, and other materials. These techniques are employed in various biomedical, structural, aerospace, and other industries. This Special Issue will focus on green manufacturing, the Internet of Things, metal cutting, precision engineering, analytical modeling, and optimization strategies for diverse industries. Special Issue on Advances in Additive Manufacturing and Sustainable Innovation: New Materials, Processes, and Designs for a Greener Future

Description Additive manufacturing is layer-by-layer material deposition which can dominate in manufacturing of complex designs. There are seven types of additive manufacturing which can be used to print powder, liquid, or filament forms of materials. The binder jetting process utilizes powdered materials and liquid binder to form layers. Melted wires, filament stocks, or powders are printed using the electron gun in the direct energy deposition method. Materials drawn through nozzles are printed in the material extrusion method. In the powder bed fusion method, the powder form of materials is printed using lasers. In ultrasonic additive manufacturing methods, ultrasonic weld is used to join metal sheets. In the SLA method, the liquid form of polymers is laser cured and printed through a polymerization process. In wire arc welding, also called robotic welding, we use welding power sources and manipulators to build 3D shapes through arc deposition. There are plenty of research problems existing in terms of producing quality products, cost saving, optimized printing, etc. Taking into account the existing research gap and space, this Special Issue is aimed at disseminating knowledge on innovative approaches to integrated additive manufacturing processes. This would aim to have collective information on complex structures and functional materials with tailored properties for various applications, including aerospace, healthcare, and consumer products. This Special Issue would therefore aim to spread wide technological knowledge and advances for the future sustainable world. Hence, contributions pinning to any composites, sustainable materials, biomaterials, bioinspired structures, and material processing methods pinning to additive manufacturing are invited. Review articles and full research articles on additive manufacturing of metals and polymers are welcomed. Potential topics include but are not limited to the following: Material Compatibility and Selection: Articles focusing on the selection and compatibility of materials for additive manufacturing, considering factors such as metallurgical properties, thermal behavior, and process interactions. Process Optimization and Parameter Control: Articles focusing on feature research; optimizing process parameters and control strategies to enhance the quality, efficiency, and reproducibility of additive manufacturing processes. Defect-free 3D Printed Parts: Articles discussing the mechanical properties, metallurgical properties, and stress concentrated defects of additively manufactured metal parts and/or microstructural analysis, defect characterization, and mechanical testing of polymers. Bio-Inspired Additive Manufactured Parts: Articles that utilize bio-inspired structures and synergies. Sustainable additive manufactured parts: Articles focusing on sustainable materials such as biobased materials, recycled materials, eco-friendly composites, green materials, or materials that use less energy. Materials that could also help in a zero carbon environment could also be considered. Special Issue on Eco-sustainable Materials and Technologies to Address Technological Challenges

Description The global demand for environmentally and economically sustainable materials and technologies driven by the urgent need to reduce the environmental impact of industrial processes and products has stimulated significant interest and innovation in practices. This includes the development of materials that are not only efficient and durable but also have a minimal ecological footprint during their life cycle. Increasing interest has been devoted to the use of polymers derived from renewable resources such as plants, animals, insects, and microbes, which offer a promising alternative to conventional petroleum-based polymers. These biopolymers, including cellulose, chitosan and polylactic acid, are inherently biodegradable and have a smaller environmental footprint. Enriching the physicochemical and functional properties of polymers with organic/inorganic nanomaterials is not only in line with ecological goals, but also opens up new avenues for the creation of high-performance materials that meet the needs of modern applications. Despite progress, the field of sustainable materials and green technologies faces several challenges. One of the main challenges is to improve the mechanical properties and durability of these biopolymers to match or exceed those of traditional synthetic polymers. Furthermore, there is a need to develop scalable and cost-effective synthesis methods capable of producing high-quality composites with consistent and reproducible performance. Finally, the scalability of new materials and technologies from the laboratory to industrial applications is a challenge facing researchers. Addressing these challenges requires innovative approaches in materials science and engineering as well as interdisciplinary collaboration. This aim of this Special Issue is to address these challenges by providing a platform for researchers to share their latest findings and insights focused on the use of innovative sources of natural polymers and environmentally sustainable synthetic strategies for the development of composite materials. We welcome original research and review articles that present innovative research addressing the aforementioned challenges, including new synthesis techniques, improved material properties, and successful applications in different fields.
