The International Journal for the Computer and Telecommunications Industry

Computer and Communications networks are key infrastructures of the information society with high socio-economic value as they contribute to the correct operations of many critical services (from healthcare to finance and transportation). Internet is the core of today's computer-communication infrastructures. This has transformed the Internet, from a robust network for data transfer between computers, to a global, content-rich, communication and information system where contents are increasingly generated by the users, and distributed according to human social relations. Next-generation network technologies, architectures and protocols are therefore required to overcome the limitations of the legacy Internet and add new capabilities and services. The future Internet should be ubiquitous, secure, resilient, and closer to human communication paradigms.

Computer Communications is a peer-reviewed international journal that publishes high-quality scientific articles (both theory and practice) and survey papers covering all aspects of future computer communication networks (on all layers, except the physical layer), with a special attention to the evolution of the Internet architecture, protocols, services, and applications. Topics include, but are not limited to:

    Internet of Things
    Edge/cloud computing
    Green networking
    Mobile and ubiquitous networks
    Terrestrial and Non-terrestrial networks
    Mobile network services and applications
    Experimental test-beds and research platforms
    Algorithmic aspects of communication networks
Emerging technologies for next generation network
Future Internet architecture, protocols and services
Modeling, measurement, and simulation of computer communication networks

Special Issues
Special Issue on Selected and extended papers from the IFIP Networking 2024 Conference
Submission Date: 2024-12-22

Authors of selected paper from the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Networking 2024 Conference are invited to submit and extended version of the paper for publication on the SI. Though there are not mandated additional pages, we expect that submitted papers are extended in non-trivial ways, adding insight andcontribution, also taking into account the conference interactions. The Networking 2024 is the the 23rd edition of the series, sponsored by the IFIP Technical Committee on Communication Systems (TC6), IEEE ComSoc and Italian RESTART Foundation. Networking is a highly selective conference that brings together academic and industrial experts of the networking community to discuss the most recent advances in networking, to highlight key issues, identify trends, and develop a vision of the future Internet from a design, deployment and operation standpoints. The focus of the conference is on the following areas: Network Architectures, Applications and Services, Network Modeling, Analysis and Operation, Network Security and Privacy and Wireless Networking. The focus of the special issue will be structured around, but are not limited to, the following areas (in alphabetical order): 5G/6G networks and beyond Anomaly and malware detection Applications of privacy-preserving computation in networks Blockchain, ledger technologies, and their network-related applications Complex and dynamic networks Data center networking Data-driven network design Delay/disruption tolerant networks Device-to-device communications Digital Continuum Drone networking and unmanned technology-based services and applications Emerging value-added services and applications Evolution of IP network architectures and protocols Fog and edge computing Green networking Heterogeneous and integrated networks In-network computing Information Centric Networking Internet of Things (IoT), and crowdsensing/crowdsourcing Localization in indoor environments Long-range communications Machine learning (ML) and networking, artificial intelligence (AI) (Multi-tenant) network slicingmmWave, and THz communications Network architectures, applications, and services Network attack/intrusion detection and mitigation Network automation and management Network economics and Game Theory Network forensics Network function virtualization (NFV) Network modelling, analysis, and measurement Network performance and optimization Network security, authentication, measurement, trust and privacy Network testbeds Network traffic analysis Non-terrestrial networks Opportunistic networks Optical networking Overlay and P2P networks Participatory networks Performance measurements Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Protective and collaborative networking Public Safety Networks Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Resilient networks Quality of service (QoS), quality of experience (QoE) Quantum networking, quantum communications Resource management Self-organizing networks Social networking Socio-economic aspects of networks, pricing, and billing Software-defined networking (SDN) Traffic engineering Topology characterization Traffic monitoring and analysis Trustworthy and multi-metric routing User behavior modelling, user profiling and tracking Vehicular networks and communications Web technologies Wireless and mobile networks Wireless power transfer networks Wireless sensor networks Guest editors: Ioannis Chatzigiannakis, Phd Sapienza University of Rome, Roma, Italy Periklis Chatzimisios, PhD International Hellenic University, Thessaloniki, Greece Luis Muñoz, PhD University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain Manabu Tsukada, PhD University of Tokyo, Bunkyo-Ku, Japan Manuscript submission information: This Special Issue is by Guest Editor invitation-only. Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence of Things for Future Communication Networks
Submission Date: 2024-12-31

The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) and internet of things (IoT) technologies brings about artificial intelligence of things (AIoT), referring to a groundbreaking technology that leverages AI models to process the large amount of data generated by IoT devices. AIoT collects and processes IoT data in real time and empowers IoT devices to run AI models for intelligent decisions. AIoT seamlessly integrates the cutting-edge technologies, e.g., sensing, cloud and edge computing, and big data analytics, and has a wide range of applications, e.g., intelligent transportation systems and smart healthcare. We envision the future communication network to be a large-scale mass-connected network consisting of billions of cloud, edge, and end devices. AIoT empowers future communication networks in mass connection, low-latency data transmission and routing, virtualization and resource abstraction, data security and privacy, intelligent decisions, etc. Meanwhile, future communication networks provide a platform to meet the high storage, networking, and computation requirements and run AIoT algorithms. This special issue aims to tackle the challenging issues and foster original research and innovative solutions related to AIoT for future communication networks. We welcome the dissemination of high-quality research on emerging ideas, approaches, theories, frameworks, and practices of AIoT technologies, especially in future communication networks. Prospective authors are invited to submit original manuscripts on topics including but not limited to: New AIoT framework, architecture, and platforms of future communication networks AIoT sensing and communication in future communication networks Edge artificial intelligence for AIoT AIoT security and privacy solutions for future communication networks AIoT machine learning and data mining for future communication networks Novel systems and cases studies of AIoT-enabled future communication networks Emerging applications of AIoT-enabled future communication networks Note that the impact of the contributions should be clearly demonstrated in the context of AIoT in future communication networks. Papers that do not directly address this theme will be considered out of scope and will be subject to immediate rejection. Merely including a few descriptive paragraphs in the introduction is not sufficient to demonstrate relevance; the entire manuscript should be substantially focused on AIoT in future communication networks. Timeline: Submission Open Date *31/05/2024 Final Manuscript Submission Deadline *31/12/2024 Editorial Acceptance Deadline *31/03/2025
